At this time Mac McGee had started flying a three-seat Stinson between Bristol Bay in Alaska and Anchorage. McGee did not have the finances at this point to support his small airline but he and his team persevered and stuck through thick and thin often working 24 hours. Sometimes the paychecks were delayed by weeks but no one was giving up.
In 1934 a merger happened with Star Air Service and thus created the largest airline in Alaska. There were a few more mergers and name changes, Alaska Airlines was born. Alaska Airlines was using surplus military aircrafts by the late 1940's and had got into charter work. Some of their famous charters include the Berlin Airlift in 1948 and airlifting of Yemenite Jews to Israel.
By the time the 60s ended, Alaska had strengthened its operations with another merger and this time with Alaska Coastal-Ellis and Cordova airlines. This widened Alaska's world and now they were flying from Fairbanks to Ketchikan and Seattle. Alaska Airlines hit the news more often flying during cold and bitter winter months to the then Soviet Union. It has been more than 70 years since Alaska Airlines first hit the sky and since then they have stuck together through every storm. The Alaska Airline spirit is based on the very land it was born in and embodies the spirit of can do and neighbor-helping-neighbor.
